You can start whenever you like, take as long as you like (up to 9 months) and there is no need to attend an exam centre…

Background to Shipping is the flexible, quick start course for anyone interested in learning about shipping.

The course contains 9 lessons covering:

Ships and Trade
Global shipping and trading patterns. Types of vessels. Maritime geography
The Business and its players
Shipping companies: principals, intermediaries and practitioners: their role and responsibilities. National and International organisations. Classification and registration societies. Shipping contracts
Bills of Lading
The three functions and different types of Bills of lading. Release and delivery of cargo
Port Agency
Role and authority of an agent. Port services and the providers. Cargo working. Husbandry. Local requirements
Bulk Carrier and Tanker Documents
Charter parties and other documents. Basic laytime concepts
Liner Agency Documentation
The agency agreement. Space allocation, sales and marketing, dealing with cargo bookings, special cargo. Documentation. Conferences and consortia
Chartering
The chartering markets and different types of charter. How the deal is made. The charterer’s authority and responsibility. Post fixture responsibilities. Brokerage. Specialist brokers
Ports and Cargoes
The location, origins and facilities of ports. A selection of some ports with details of their import and export facilities
Ship Management and Operations
Different types of management – integral or independent managers. Roles and responsibilities of a ship management department
 
Multiple Choice tests
At the end of each lesson, there is a multiple choice test to be completed online.

You will receive instant feedback on your score with email confirmation.

Successful candidates will be awarded a Coracle TutorShip certificate, validated by The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers.

Successful candidates are those who achieve over 60%
You will be awarded a pass with merit if you score over 90%
Access to the course is for a maximum of 9 months – there is no minimum time requirement and there are no course pre-requisites.

The Foundation Diploma is designed for those who are either new to the industry, or do not want to take the full professional qualifying examinations necessary for membership of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, but do want to further their knowledge of the shipping industry.

Students need to pass 2 exams for this internationally recognised certificate, one of which must be Introduction to Shipping. The second subject can be selected from the Group 2 subjects shown below.

Having passed the Foundation Diploma students should consider studying for the Advanced Diploma which further develops the knowledge gained from the Foundation Diploma.

Advanced Diploma

The Advanced Diploma is designed for those who either have a limited working knowledge of the industry or do not want to take the full professional qualifying examinations necessary for membership of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers but do want to expand their understanding of the shipping industry.

Students need to pass 2 exams for this internationally recognised certificate, one of which must be Shipping Business. The second subject can be selected from the Group 2 subjects shown below.

Having passed the Advanced Diploma students should consider increasing their knowledge base by studying a further five subjects. Having passed these, the student qualifies to apply for membership of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers.

ICS Membership exams – PQE

ICS Membership exams – PQE

ICS (Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers) Membership Exams - PQE
 
Professional Qualifying Exams (PQE) is the route to membership of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers – ICS

You need to pass exams in 7 subjects in order to complete PQE.

Year 1: You must attempt minimum of 2 exams (please note that this is new for April 2011 exams – students starting Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) PQE before April 2011 were required to take min 3), including Shipping Business.
Candidates must pass all Group 1 subjects plus 3 others from Group 2/3. There are 3 options for choosing which subjects to take from Group 2 and 3:

Option A – 2 from Group 2 and 1 from Group 3
Option B – 3 from Group 2
Option C – 1 from Group 2 and 2 from Group 3

You may apply for exemptions if you have relevant professional or educational qualifications: these MUST be validated by ICS. Please contact them directly to see if you qualify.
